The What and Why of Integrative Healthcare?

Integrative healthcare is a combination of western medicine and functional medicine. Functional medicine is a field specializing in assessing  the whole person and addressing root causes of disease with the goal of improving and/or resolving your symptoms. Functional medicine heavily relies on food as medicine and improving foundations of health. These include stress, sleep, nutrition, energy, and exercise.

 Functional medicine recognizes that the human body is comprised of many complex interconnected systems. When one system is dysfunctional it causes a cascade of issues that affects other body systems. Hence why finding and treating the root cause results in an improvement in several areas of health.

 

On the other hand, western medicine views the human body as separate systems and treats them as such. This is why you have a cardiologist, urologist, gastroenterologist etc. Emphasis is placed on treating symptoms of disease using pharmaceuticals. Often symptoms are improved, but long-term medication therapy is generally encouraged or needed to keep them at bay, which brings me to my next point.

Why Integrative Healthcare?

Modern healthcare is currently failing us. The incidence of mental illness, obesity, and related chronic conditions continues to rise year after year with conventional treatment. Our current system is reactive and overly reliant on pharmaceuticals which often mask symptoms but never treat the underlying issues.

Some common underlying causes that are often not addressed by traditional healthcare providers include hormone dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies, gut dysfunction, stress, genetics, environmental toxins, metabolic dysfunction, diet, trauma and lifestyle habits. These are left unchecked for many reasons including limited time with patients, lack of provider education/knowledge, and little to no insurance reimbursement for advanced testing, alternative/natural therapies or preventative strategies.  

 

Integrative healthcare brings the basics back to health by combining the best of western medicine with alternative and natural therapies to provide meaningful improvement to your quality of life. The focus is not on quick fixes with a pill, but longevity requiring time and effort on behalf of the clinician AND patient. We all can heal ourselves when we have the right tools in place. With specialized and advanced testing and interventions, together we can create a plan that is tailored to you and addresses your unique needs.  

What is Integrative Psychiatry?

Conventional psychiatry treats based on presenting symptoms instead of testing. Unfortunately, up to 50% of patients will fail initial treatment and go through a trial-and-error phase before they find a regimen that is helpful. Psychotherapeutics can take up to 6 weeks to be fully effective. This combined with unmanaged or intolerable side effects can lead to many patients discontinuing treatment and not having their needs met.

 Integrative psychiatry utilizes a holistic approach to uncover the root causes of mental illness. It combines medication treatment with cutting edge advanced testing and treatments to curate an individualized plan that targets symptoms at the cellular level.

What is Integrative Weight Loss and Metabolic Health?

​Traditional weight loss programs focus on short term quick fixes with medication. The goal is to lose a ton of weight fast and that’s it. All too often patients don't receive the education they need to lose weight to sustain results and maintain good health. Patients are losing muscle mass and becoming malnourished in the pursuit of weight loss which further impairs metabolism and increases risk of injury, frailty, and chronic disease. People often regain their weight after stopping weight loss medications, which is reminiscent of yo-yo dieting and does no good for long term cardiovascular or metabolic health.

Integrative weight loss utilizes advanced testing to identify the causes behind weight loss difficulties. Medications along with natural therapies and lifestyle improvements are used to promote long term weight maintenance and optimize metabolism.

 My program is not a cookie cutter quick fix, but one that produces long term results not just aimed at weight loss, but longevity and optimal metabolic functioning, thereby reducing your risk for chronic disease and potentially reversing them.

 

My goal is to make sure you have an efficient metabolism so you can maintain your weight loss and health without long term medication, have energy, mental clarity, and confidence.

Weight loss should not have a one size fits all approach. I ensure the whole person is addressed and unique body needs are considered in making a tailor-made plan. 

What is Fitness Coaching?

Online fitness coaching is a comprehensive individualized program that includes a training plan, supplement plan, and nutrition plan. This style of coaching is focused on achieving specific aesthetic or weight goals. This can include gaining muscle and/or losing fat mass. This coaching method requires clients to be self-motivated and accountable to themselves to execute the plan created for them. Clients often check in with their coach every 2 weeks to assess progress and makes changes to the plan as the client progresses. A good candidate for this style of coaching is someone who has general knowledge of nutrition and fitness.  â€‹

This differs from personal training, which only includes one on one in-person training at a gym. Fitness coaches typically do not provide in-person training. Personal trainer's can give guidance on nutrition and supplements, but do not offer customized all inclusive plans. Personal training is good for beginners or someone who needs instruction on proper form, more accountability, and exercise guidance.

My fitness coaching is tailored to the individual who wants to transform their body, has access to a gym, and is willing to strength train a minimum of 3x a week. They have some experience with nutrition and fitness and are ready to take it to the next level.  

​

My program is designed to achieve results by  

  • Offering customized plans tailored to your body’s starting point and goals. 

  • An app that provides access to your plans to allow for tracking and communication with me.  

  • Biweekly or monthly check ins via app to review progress and make changes if needed.
